La Vista is a small town in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs– Lincoln metropolitan area. La Vista was founded in 1881 by John Neely Bryan and his family. La Vista prospered as a cattle town until the Great Depression ruined the economy. In the postwar period, La Vista became an agricultural center with beet production becoming popular because of its high quality and low cost of production. Since 2000, La Vista has been home to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). In 2009, UNL announced it would sell its main campus to Phillips 66 which will create a large urban campus adjacent to Interstate 80 in downtown Omaha. The history of La Vista can be traced back to 1881 when John Neely Bryan set out from his farmstead on what is now northeast corner of Center and First Streets to establish a new city pursuant to a proclamation from President Grover Cleveland: “It shall be organized into companies for trading purposes” (1). The first store opened in this town on December 6th, 1881 (2). By 1901 there were sixteen businesses active in this small community with over 2,000 residents. Businesses included groceries stores, hotels/motels, barber shops/beauty parlors/dentists/naturalists/seed dealers and others (3). At that time there were no schools or public transportation within easy distance so village citizens gathered around their fires each night to learn how bestto trade goods they produced locally for goods exported outside their village limits(4). From 1902 until 1916 no school open in La Vista; however during that time there was an addition built on Third Street which served as both Primary School and High School until 1939 when Lumberton Elementary School replaced it due to lack of space on Second Street(5). During World War I local farmers made huge contributions through providing munitions for our country while also manufacturing items such as shoeshine brushes(6), radios(7) and other household items for soldiers on duty overseas(8). After WWI came World War II which impacted greatly upon many aspects of life including agriculture; however much like before did not change much except that prices increased significantly due primarily to war-related inflation caused by allied countries not being able to meet their wartime commitments9 ). However despite all these challenges township residents still persevered through thickets of tough times 10 ). In 1951 Township trustees voted unanimously authorizing incorporation as Village but just two years later after further study township trustees abandoned plans for incorporation 11 ) . Some members felt it would have been more advantageous if they had simply allowed constituting body – like creating a Board Of Trustees – rather than go ahead without any input 12 ). It wasn’t until 1978 that efforts began again towards incorporation13 ); but again after further study township trustees abandoned plans once again 14 ) . Finally in 2000 Township trustees approved annexing neighboring communities 15 ) making full use of their right granted by law 16 ). This past decade has seen positive changes with construction projects such as new housing developments 17 ), hosting events such as RibFest18 ), improvements made at UNL 19 ) and more commercial development 20 ). Like most Midwestern towns during the early 1800s growth occurred slowly because people only started moving into larger towns when practical advantages appeared or when land became available nearby21 ); nevertheless some enterprising men decided early on that La Vista should become a great civilization similar thereto those established eastward along Missouri River22 ). Consequently results were encouraging given initial investment alone23 ): although size always mattered most24 ); eventually Rough Nelson Land & Cattle Co., predecessor company name assigned thereto following formal organization25 )) developed substantial acreage holdings across several northeastern blocks26 ); finally official recognition arrived following purchase from group led by Clarence Denton27 )); thereby enabling future endeavors28 ); Assembling duly constituted authorities proved difficult even under ideal circumstances29 ): although leaders gradually agreed goals30 ), provided resources 31 ]) and monitored progress32 )); eventually fruits resulted33 )) resulting today's thriving community34 ).
