This weapon was also known as “the George Washington Gun” because it was used by General George Washington during his battle against British forces at Yorktown in 1781. With this type of trigger mechanism, you pulled back on the stock until the hammer came off the firing pin and held onto it until you released it to fire again. In 1854, La Vista was founded as a small trading post on the Missouri River by Major John C. Fremont and his party of U.S. Army officers. The post served as a supply depot for the army during its westward expansion and also acted as a center for trade with the local Indian tribes. La Vista was abandoned in 1881 when the railroad came to town and it ceased to exist as an entity within decades. The story of La Vista begins with John C. Fremont, who made the discovery of gold in California in 1849 and decided to move west to try to find more deposits of gold. He organized an expedition that traveled through Nebraska in search of new land to mine, but only found gold prospectors at La Vista. After a year's exploration, Fremont realized he had been too optimistic about Nebraska's potential for gold and returned home without finding any new mines or lands that could be sold off as property investors began investing in his discoveries throughout central America. Fremont's decision not to pursue further exploration led him into financial trouble, which caused him to sell off some of his assets in Central America before moving back eastward again in 1850-1851 seeking new opportunities for mining operations across central America instead of continuing down the Missouri River route he had charted out earlier that year.
