La Vista is a city in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 9,639 at the 2010 census. La Vista is the fourth-largest city in Nebraska and the twelfth-largest city in the United States. It is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. The history of La Vista begins with French Canadian immigrants who established a farmstead on what is now Main Street in 1854. In 1875, La Vista was platted as a town by commissioners under direction of governor John J. Neuman and named for General Lafayette (1755-1834). The first store opened in 1876 and two years later, the first post office was established. A hotel was built on Main Street in 1879 and soon became an important tourist destination for easterners visiting Kearney County for agriculture or fishing trips to Fordsburg or Fremont Lake. In 1886, La Vista's trustees voted to name it for General John Custer (1821-1896), during his military service at Fort Riley near Topeka, Kansas; he had been killed at Black Hills National Monument near Rapid City earlier that year while scouting Indian Territorysthough not yet part of Nebraska territory

However, since the late 1990sLa Vista has seen an increase in development with new housing developments being built along with several restaurants and businesses opening up shop in recent years. As a result of this growth, La Vista is now an Overall vibrant community that continues to make waves within its community through entrepreneurship and innovation
