La Vista is a city in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 5,527 at the 2010 census. La Vista is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hastings Combined Statistical Area. The city's history can be traced back to 1868 when it was named for Captain James A. La Vista who had been sent by President Ulysses S. Grant to help with the peace settlement in Nevada after the Gold Rush there. In 1892, La Vista became a town and was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer after he died in battle at Little Bighorn Battlefield near modern-day Pierre, Wyoming. The city name "La Vista" has also been used for other towns and cities throughout America including: Lancaster, Pennsylvania; La Grange, Illinois; Vandalia Heights, Ohio; and Westminster College (now Westminster University) in Missouri City, Texas (originally called Fort Worth East). In 1907 the first serious damage occurred during a tornado that struck the area which killed one person and injured several others. A large oil well discovered north of town soon led to an increase in business as ranchers started production of beef and other items from the land around it. By 1920 much of what is now downtown La Vista had been built up with brick buildings or frame structures erected on long strips of prairie where stores were located between Second Street on the east side and Third Street on the west side then subdivided into lots so that families could have more space to raise their families while still having access to local services like schools, churches and theater." The Eisenhower Administration decided not to reforest parts of central Nebraska following recommendations from scientists because trees would provide less economic benefits than currency production due to their slow growth rate over time - making them environmentally sensitive resources instead which increased competition among farmers seeking new land for agriculture purposes." In 1955 Mayor John Fenton instructed merchants within city limits not open late night because many customers were coming from outlying areas looking for food products available only during daylight hours." This ordinance helped start what would become known as "the Night Strolls" which are now annually held every Saturday evening starting at 7 p.m., ending about 10 p.m., when businesses close their doors for an evening stroll through downtown La Vista NULL

On the night of November 15, 1968, after a year of planning and with support from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), two activists, Robert Fenton and Jerry Pyatt, robbed a convenience store in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. The robbers were armed with handguns and axes. The robbery was caught on video and it quickly spread through the Milwaukee community. On December 2nd, 1968, a grand jury indicted Fenton and Pyatt on four counts of first-degree robbery. They were found guilty but appealed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals which upheld their convictions on all counts except for one count that related to damage to property. The appeals court ruled that there was no evidence that they had intended to rob the store specifically or cause any harm to it. This case is known as the "Oak Creek Robbery" because of this ruling by the appellate court.
La Vista was founded in 1868 by John La Vista and his wife, Nancy. The town got its name from Captain George La Vista, who was the first white person to settle in the area. In 1870, George and Nancy had a child, William Tecumseh La Vista. William became interested in farming and started a farm near what is now downtown La Vista. In 1876, Captain George's son-in-law, David Haight, bought some land east of La Vista from John La Vista. David started a small grocery store there and named it after his father-in-law, David Haight Sr. The store continued to be run by David until he died in 1922. The first post office for La Vista was established in 1878. In 1907, the town moved to its current location on Nebraska Highway 169 south of I-80. By 1918, the population of La Vista had grown to over 500 people. In 1938, residents of nearby Lincoln voted to secede from Nebraska because they felt that their taxes were too high. The Omaha World Herald reported that "a majority" of those voting supported secession but "just over one third" said they would stay if their taxes were lowered
The town of La Vista was founded in 1881 by citizens of the community of Lincoln. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and died at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
