La Vista is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 6,542 at the 2010 census. La Vista is located on the upper Platte River. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Vista were French traders in 1819. A post office was established in 1825 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1868, La Vista was platted and named for Captain George Washington LaVista by his son-in-law, John Dickson Swanton. A railway station was built along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (later the Union Pacific Railroad) in 1872 and became defunct in 1951. In 1886–87, a court case led to the construction of a schoolhouse near present day High School as part of a system of public education which began in Omaha City. The first teacher taught classes inside the new school building until 1893 when an addition was added to allow for instruction outdoors on flatlands adjoining the riverbank east of town limits. In 1913–14, funds were appropriated by then Governor James Mapes to build a high school within townlimits but no action occurred until 1916 when $10,000 from state coffers went into acquiring land northeast of town limits for use as an agricultural training center known as Camp Randall which would become High School University later that year; this money also funded initial construction costs for new buildings on idle farmland nearby including football fields and tennis courts which are still used today as part of campus activities). In 1940–41 completion finally came on high school – East High School – with students entering through one door only off Main Street while mainstreet operations continued around back with three small classrooms leading up to one large classroom/hall just north of current day Stadium Drive (later renamed Veterans Memorial Stadium after America's military veterans). With its original brick facade complete across two stories with intricate terra cotta trimming and large Ionic Doric columns supporting five stories tall rooflines it quickly became one of eastern Nebraska’s most recognizable landmarks both nationally and locally even earning occasional comparisons to such iconic collegiate campuses as Cornell University’s Ithaca Campus or Ohio State’s Columbus Campus before eventually being demolished following successive firestorms that destroyed much downtown business including much old city architecture during 1949–50 concurrent with increased enrollment at East High; its replacement being completed just south of Stadium Drive following more extensive renovation including addition of an air conditioned facility concessionaire/oodle room/multi purpose hall between 1945–46 followed by another severe firestorm destroying almost all buildings larger than 10 feet square (including original gymnasium/auditorium complex), again necessitating demolition resulting in today’s single wide open space dominated by large Academic Center building housing offices/ Great Hall /Lecture Hall /Library Annexes & several other smaller structuresPriority #1 has always been restoration & preservation thereof although recent budget cuts have resulted in significantly reduced staff & Divisionsemphasis instead currently being placed upon expanding Student Services areas pursuant to recently approved Master Plan submitted by Mayor Don Ness

La Vista was a small, unincorporated community located in southeastern Nebraska on the banks of the Buffalo River. It was founded by settlers from Iowa in 1871. The community had two schools and one store before it went out of business in the 1920s. La Vista was abandoned until it was reestablished as an agricultural town by federal authorities in 1926. La Vista is now a census-designated place (CDP) located within Fremont County. The first people to live in what is now La Vista were farmers who arrived from Iowa during the early 1800s. In 1871, some residents of Cedar Rapids, Iowa founded a small farm at what is now La Vista. The farm consisted of only about 175 acres and did not receive any financial support from its founders. However, because the area wasanthracite coal rich, this site became an important center for mining activity in southeastern Nebraska during the late 19th century. In 1916, several new families began moving into eastern Nebraska after they heard about land available for farming near Omaha that would be improved by USGS surveyors under the Land Grant Act of 1912. These families included those from Cedar Rapids and other east-centralIowa towns such as Waterloo and Burlington Falls which had experienced rapid population growth due to railroad construction throughout that decade. When these groups started looking for homes around their new location they noted that there were no stores or other amenities available close toby so they began to build their own homes using logs found nearby or brought over from neighboring farms.. One of these pioneers, Dora Luskiewicz, helped start what is now known as La Vista High School in 1916 when she donated land on which the school building sits today. Dora's donation allowed for a school with classroom space plus a barn/workshop used for storage and meetings among settlement members until 1924 when western Fremont County became part of Washburn County . At first there were only ten students at La Vista High School but soon enough additional classrooms and facilities were added along with a library which opened in 1922 . Over time more businesses began opening up including a post office (1926), restaurant (1927), blacksmith shop (1928), grocery store (1929), lumberyard (1930), doctor's office (1931) and even a tire factory (!?) during World War II! Over time life here changed somewhat due to changes brought about by technological advances like automobiles which arrived here sometime after1920 Most notably however houses lost their charm due to dirt tracks leading directly outside onto paved streets while backyards retained many characteristics typical of pioneer days like fences made out hay bales instead of wire mesh
La Vista was founded in 1854 by John C. Fremont, who named it for General James H. LaVeta, who had led the United States army at the Battle of Buena Vista. The town grew rapidly after the Railroad arrived in 1870, and by 1880 it had a population of 1,500. It became a city in 1907 and experienced rapid growth during World War II as the town supported the military effort. The population decreased following the war and la vista lost its status as a city until it regained it in 2003 when it annexed neighboring Decatur.
