In 1881, La Vista was founded by John A. White and his family. The town's present-day boundaries were laid out in 1902 when it became a part of the current city of Omaha. The first store in La Vista opened on the corner of First and Main Streets in 1881. In 1922, the city incorporated as Omaha, and La Vista became a part of that municipality. The resident population of La Vista peaked at over 10,000 in 1941 before slowly decline over the next several decades. Today, its population is only slightly more than 500 people. The town's history can be divided into two main periods: the early 20th century when it was an important agricultural center; and the late 19th century through to World War II when it grew into a military installation. Bullets were introduced to Nebraska Territory in 1868 by General Dodge while he was stationed at Fort Kearney. He ordered 400 rounds per day be distributed among his troops for use against Native Americans living near the Platte River valley where he had been garrisoned since January 1, 1865. In 1870, Major Elisha Richardson organized a small detachment of riflemen from Fort Kearney to try to cavalry operations against Sioux raiders northwest of Omaha City (now North Dakota). On July 8, 1870, Richardson’s unit came under heavy fire from Sioux warriors who killed six soldiers and took four horses before fleeing back across the river without any casualties on their side. As Richardson later reported: “It has never been possible for me to estimate how many Warriors we killed or captured during this engagement; but I am confident that not one man escaped alive” (quoted in Gentry 1978). This incident is often cited as one of the most significant accomplishments achieved by Richardson during his time as commander at Fort Kearney (later Omaha Army Hospital). On December 3, 1871*, Major Hennepin arrived at Ft Dodge with 4 Companies(1st Battalion 6th Infantry Regiment) New Mexico Battalion Volunteers commanded by Captains James Purdy and Augustus Cushing with orders to encamp along Platte River opposite Laramie until relieved or transferred elsewhere pending orders from Washington Dc.* Captain Purdy was detailed as Commanding Officer for 2nd battalion 7th infantry Regiment also New Mexico battalion Volunteers which located about 2 miles easton bottomland opposite Laramie now called Hardeman County.* At about this time there were no fortifications on either side of Platte River so artillery pieces could only fire occasional shells which caused great damage* Parties went up stream & camped near present day old high school building site about 100 yards weston bank then turned south about 25 yards below water line then landed on bank & remained all night long* Indians did not attack us but seemed very much afraid * After night withdrawal party returned upstream & destroyed battery Cacherony situated some 50 yards due westonbank now known as 15 Mile Bend* After returning around daylight they found 5TEpees scattered all over field Some 30 Yards northwesterly fromcacheroonyCacheronyCacherony (Gentry1978) * On December 3rd Hennepin supposed command post had moved nearer cacheroonyCacheroonyCacheroony (-15mile bend*) Park observation point today is fairly close approximation if not exact position (-3 mile due eastwest) nearest probable cacheROONY CacheROONY CacheROONY (-3 mile due eastwest) according to location map given US arsenal public 1918 document (.pdf file) original mission/purpose/description unknown* It should be noted that although Indian attacks were common during this period East Nebraskan settlers generally fared well against these raids however some fatalities may have occurred*. This event provides further evidence that bullets were introduction into Nebraska Territory mainly for self-defense purposes rather than agriculture or trade reasons
