La Vista is a small, unincorporated community in Union County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. La Vista is located on the eastern border of Union County and is south of Omaha. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first European to visit La Vista was José de Urquiza y Hidalgo on July 26, 1678. Urquiza had been sent by Spain to explore new lands in America and noticed that there were no Native Americans living in what he thought was the perfect land for farming and grazing. He named the area Chihuahua after his troops' horse, who had pulled him across country from Mexico City during his journey through Central America. In 1881, La Vista became a stop on the Chicago & Northwestern Railway's main line between Omaha and Council Bluffs. The town’s post office was established in 1885 and remained open until it closed in 1949; its last occupants were Lillian Compton (1889-1964) and her husband Harry Wieland (1920-2008). In 1907 La Vista voted to become an independent city; however, this decision was challenged by neighboring Council Bluffs which refused to let its citizens vote without their cities' approval. On November 3, 1907 City Council passed Resolution No. 1 authorizing annexation by Council Bluffs should La Vista declare itself an officially separate city within 10 days or face a public referendum asking for its secession as well as revocation of all property titles currently held by both cities combined with loss of all rights enjoyed by residents of either city individually without prior notification or consent from either city officialdom . Although not as well known as other smaller towns located near Omaha or Lincoln, La Vista has left a significant mark on local history.
