Kearney is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of the Missouri River and is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. The first settlers in Kearney were men who had come overland from Illinois in 1847. They built a cabin on the south bank of the Missouri River and named it after General James Kearny, who had fought against Mexico in its War for Independence. They also founded a small store and post office there. Families came to Kearney more frequently during the 1870s because of new transportation methods such as railroads and stagecoaches that made it easier to get goods to customers outside of Omaha. In 1881, when Nebraska became a state, Kearney was included within its boundaries. In 1904, people found oil shale under several miles (1 km) of town and began leasing land from drillers for oil production. The townspeople soon realized that they would need more than just a single store to support their economy; they needed an entire blockbusters for manufacturing purposes because no one else would give them access to local resources. So they decided to build their own refinery using what they could find nearby: sandstone quarries, lead mines, agricultural land and oil shale deposits. In 1925, when Interstate 80 was completed through central Nebraska, Kearney quickly became one of the most important industrial cities in Nebraska because it lay directly on I-80's path between Omaha and Lincoln City. The city's stature only grew with time; by 2000 it boasted over 100 businesses including 25 lightmanufacturing companies as well as two large hospitals and two professional schools (Nebraska State University-Lincoln City Campus and Northern Iowa University-Kearney Campus). Today's economy is based largely on agriculture but also includes service industries such as retail trade (New Seasons Supermarket), education (Nebraska State University-Lincoln City Campus), health care (Hospitality Medical Group/Eddie Bauer) and government services (Department of Motor Vehicles). Although some residents commute into downtown Lincoln City or other larger cities for work or shopping opportunities there are few if any commuters living outside of Kearney proper - evidence that its tightly knit community has been able to remain stable since World War II despite difficult times elsewhere in rural America due to technological change alone

Kearney, Nebraska is a small town in the U.S. state of Nebraska and it is located on the Missouri River. Kearney was founded by John Kearney in 1868 as a trading post on the river. The post was renamed Kearney City in 1870, and then Kearney County in 1907. It was consolidated with neighboring Osborne County in 1912 to form Kearney-Osborne County. The population of Kearny declined from its peak of approximately 10,000 during the 1930s to around 7,000 by 1990, but has since grown again thanks to migration from other rural areas in Nebraska and Kansas into the town. The first permanent settler in what is now Kearny was John Brown who crossed the Missouri River from Platteville, Wisconsin on July 8th, 1847. He built a cabin near what is now downtown Kearny and named it after his home state of Massachusetts which he had just visited four weeks earlier. Brown’s cabin became one of the first businesses in town when it opened for business on July 12th, 1848. The first school also opened for students at this time and was called “The Academy” because it functioned as both a teacher training facility as well as a place where children could learn about reading and writing. In 1850, another man by the name of James Kipp made an unsuccessful attempt to cross the river at what is now downtown Kearny and instead built himself a ferry dock acrossriver near present day Armstrong Boulevard which he named “Kearney Ferry Dock” after his home country Ireland which he had just visited two years earlier! Eventually more people started moving into town including some families that had moved there from Hannibal or overland routes along the Great Plains via Wyoming Territory or Colorado Territory! By 1860, there were already 100 residents living in downtown Kearny! By 1890 however only 5 residents remained within city limits! Today much of what once constituted downtown today consists only of remnants of buildings dating back to before 1900 such as The Academy building which still stands vacant today! This decline can be partially attributed to several factors such as changes brought about by World War I (a conflict that devastated much farmland east of Omaha) as well as increased competition from other nearby towns such as Osborne County seat Ottumwa Iowa which began appearing on maps following Nebraska annexation into Iowa following World War II! However most importantly many local businesses closed down during this time due largely to economic reasons rather than any lacklustre quality services offered by their competitors!! Despite these factors though Downtown recently experienced an influx of new residents spearheaded mainly by developers interested in restoring/revitalizing old historic buildings within city limits!! These restaurateurs have been able to bring much needed life back both inside & outside city limits alike giving hope that Downtown will rebound soon enough despite its current low population count!!! Today many people are proud citizens OF Kearney especially given all that has gone wrong during its recent history
Kearney was founded in 1868 by John Kearney and his wife, Emma. The town took its name from General James Kearny, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town had a population of only seventy people when it was founded, but it grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in nearby Porter County. Kearney became an important transportation hub for the region and played an important role in the development of Nebraska. In 1924, the town was renamed Omaha after Mayor William E. Nolan.
