Kearney, Nebraska is home to the world’s second-largest Pistol shooting event. The Kearney Gun Show & Expo takes place annually in late October and features more than 100 exhibitors from throughout the Midwest. The event includes a wide variety of firearms including handguns, shotguns, rifles, airguns and muzzleloaders. The Kearney Gun Show & Expo began in 1907 as an event to commemorate the death of local gunsmith Wm. H. Purdy. At that time, Kearney was a small town with only two blacksmiths and one riflemaker. Over the years, the Gun Show has evolved into one of the country’s most important firearms events with over 100 exhibitors from all across the United States exhibiting their latest products and services. Kearney is a small town in Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kearney County. The first settlement in what is now Kearney County was made by Captain John Cushing and his family on the east side of the Platte River in 1827. They named their land "Cushing's Ferry" after themselves. In 1836, James Gillespie founded a ferry crossing over the Platte River near present-day Kearney. The ferry became known as Gillespie's Ferry because it transported goods and passengers between Kearney and Omaha (now Lincoln). In 1861, General George Armstrong Custer camped at Camp Floyd on the north side of Kearny Creek where he later fought against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, General Custer's men burned down Gillespie's Ferry to prevent passage for Confederate cavalry units across the river. In 1881, when Nebraska became a state, Kearney saw its most significant change with incorporation into Laramie County. At this time, many farmers began moving to Nebraska from Iowa and other states due to cheap land prices in that area. As a result of this increase in traffic on local roads, businesses began opening up around town to provide services such as grocery stores, dry goods stores, telephone service and even banks. As people continued moving into town throughout the 20th century, more manufacturing occurred here including clothing manufacturers JBL & Co., Hormel Foods Inc., KFC franchises and PepsiCo.'s bottling plant which opened in 1984 located on State Street just south of current day Town Hall Square
