The first mayor of Kearney was Elijah Steele. The first school in Kearney was built by Lorenzo Snively on the east side of the Platte River near today's Midvale Cemetery. Mr. Snively donated land for the school and also provided funds to build it. The first teacher at the school was Amos Baldwin who taught until 1876 when he became chancellor of Drake University which is now called Drake University-Kearney Campus
Kearney is a small town in Nebraska, located about an hour east of Omaha. The population was 8,561 at the 2010 census. Kearney is the county seat for Kearney County and has a total area of 24 square miles (64 km²). The first Europeans to visit Kearney were fur traders who came in 1836. The town was chartered in 1881, and named after Captain George W. Kearny, USN (1824-1909), who fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Chapultepec. The community grew rapidly due to its position as the gateway to Nebraska's westward migration. In 1907, Kearney annexed part of Blair County, creating what is now known as Blair County Urban District. In 1955, President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the construction of Interstate 92 through Kearney by order of Congress under bill HJ Res No. 353; this project totaled $27 million and was completed in 1957. Today I-92 runs through Kearney and forms one side of a major transportation corridor that connects Omaha with Lincoln and other eastern cities. Kearney has experienced several waves of growth over the years – from its early days as a small farming village to its current size as an agricultural center flanked by rural communities on both sides of I-92

A post office was established at Wortham in 1871, and by 1870 it had developed into a small town with a population of about fifty residents. In 1902, local ranchers discovered coal on their property and began extracting it using techniques then unknown to humans. This invention led to the birth of civilization in this area; prior to this period there were no towns or villages hereabouts as man’s only endeavor seemed to be gathering animal fodder for his own subsistence purposes only rarely exploring any deposits that lay beyond his immediate surroundings!
