Kearney, Nebraska is a town located in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,810 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Kearney County were white men from Illinois and Indiana who arrived around 1855. They erected an adobe fort on the east side of what is now Kearney Lake. The fort was destroyed by a Sioux attack in 1862 but its ruins still stand today as a reminder of that early skirmish. A post office called Kearney was established in 1869, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Kearney was built in 1870 and named for General George Aiken (1814-92). In 1893, the present day high school opened and became known as Kearney High School. As farmers began to migrate to Nebraska during the Great Depression, they started to settle near the lake and post office buildings with their livestock onto makeshift lots which later became town square land. Kearny had one hotel until it closed due to financial difficulties during World War II; however, the old hotel has been preserved as a museum within town limits ever since. Additionally, there are several small businesses which have been active within town limits for many years including: Barnes Grain Mill (founded 1912), Purdy's Drug store (1927-2009), Sheridan Tire Store (1990s-present), First National Bank (1911-2007) and numerous restaurants including Shell gas station/convenience store/diner/hobby shop (opened 1949), Pizza Hut restaurant (1999-present), IHOP restaurant (/streaming bar) (/streaming bar) (/streaming bar) (.NET web application development company - opened 2004)), Waffle House restaurant (/ Streaming Bar / Open late on weekdays)), two convenience stores: KFC sandwich shop (/ Streaming Bar ), Joes Pizza Hut (/Streaming Bar ) It should be noted that most of these businesses were originally operated by family members who continue to operate them today; thus their individual contributions do not typically reflect village or county levels of activity when compared to more recent establishments such as Barnes Grain Mill or Purdy's Drug store which have become part of larger townships or counties over time . Some notable exceptions include Sheridan Tire Store which closed down after 50 years while Joes Pizza Hut has continued operations into present day despite being open late on weekdays (). These small businesses are indicative of how local industries often continue long after local governments may no longer own or control those assets
1863- The first Kearney post office was established. 1915- A school was built in the town. 1920- A hospital was built in Kearney. In 1951, the town became a city. The first woman to be elected to the City Council of Kearney was Mrs. Ileen Haggerty in 1974.
