Kearney is a small town in northeastern Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Kearney is the home of Kearney State University and the Kearney Clinic. The first European to visit what is now Kearney was French missionary Rémy-Jacques Marquette in 1692, who named it for Captain John C. Kearny who had explored North America in search of new fur trading routes in 1810. At that time, the area lay within present-day Iowa and Minnesota. In 1854, James Sully founded the city of Omaha on an island in the Omaha River near where Kearney now stands. In 1865, Colonel John J. Hill erected a gristmill and sawmill on what is now Main Street in downtown Kearny; these mills were among the earliest commercial operations conducted within town limits. By 1870, there were six stores and two hotels operating in downtown Kearney; by 1880, there were twenty-four stores and five hotels operating within town limits. In 1881, Major General Nelson Atherton organized a militia company from Nebraska to suppress anti-slavery protests at Fort Laramie; this company became known as The Black Hills Guardsmen (later called The Rough Riders). On November 15th of that year, they successfully suppressed a slave revolt at Fort Riley by attacking and capturing three slaves with heavy loss to their own forces; this event helped catalyze further American expansion into Kansas Territory during that era. On May 12th of 1890 – less than one year after his inauguration as Governor of Nebraska – Sam Rayburn delivered his famous speech calling for increased railroad construction throughout the Great Plains which would create many jobs across much of Kansas Territory including those located in Kearney; this speech helped spur agricultural production throughout much of eastern Nebraska including here at nearby Omaha which would benefit greatly from railway construction later on also! Kearney is a small town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 239 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha, Nebraska-Council Bluffs, Iowa-Kansas City metropolitan area. Kearney is located on the Union Pacific Railroad's main line between Omaha and Council Bluffs. The first people to live in what is now Kearney were pioneers who founded a ranch there in 1868. In 1896, the town was founded when a group of men from Hastings purchased 6 acres of land around the old post office building for $1.00 per acre (2 hectares). The town name was chosen by citizens who voted to adopt it on November 15th, 1896. In 1932, Kansas City banker Willard Waddell donated land near the intersection of US Highway 8 and US Highway 281 for development into a city center called Kearney Heights. Waddell wanted to provide a better environment for his employees working in Kansas City and he hoped that Kearny would become an important economic center within its own right. As population growth continued unabated throughout the 1930s and 1940s, businesses began moving into downtown Kearney from all over Plainfield County - including Hastings and Holland – until finally reaching their peak during the late 1970s when more than 60 businesses had their headquarters within one block of each other on Main Street! Today’s downtown core has experienced rapid growth since then as new restaurants, hotels/motels and other retail outlets have opened up along with renovated buildings dating back to 1895 including some which are still used as municipal offices today! This Continued Growth has led to increased traffic congestion on streets such as Main Street due to both pedestrian traffic corridors connecting different parts of downtown; plus business districts expanding outwards onto either side of major thoroughfares like Interstate 80 or I-4!
