Kearney, Nebraska is a town in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Kearney County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,859. The Kearney metropolitan area has a population of 92,609 as of 2018. The town was founded by men who drove out the Sioux during the Nebraska–Iowa War in 1868. The first settlers in Kearney were David Willis and his brother John Willis who arrived on horseback from Iowa on July 5, 1868. They started a small farm near present-day Kearney with eight cows and two horses. In 1870, they bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land at what is now North Youngstown Boulevard and East Main Street for $1 per acre ($30/ha). In 1871, they built a log cabin on this property which still stands today known as “Willis House” or “The Willis Cabin”. David Willis died in 1870 and John Willis continued to live there until his death in 1893. His wife Lillie moved into The Willis Cabin with him until she married Roy Bean in 1898; then she moved out and built her own home at what is now South Main Street which remains standing today as "Bean's Place." A post office called Kearny was established in 1873, but no issue appears to have been received from it. It was renamed Kearney in 1886 when mail service between Lincoln and Omaha began through Great Northern Railway officials at Kearny station north of town on State Highway 1B (now I-80). In 1889 less than one year after their arrival, brothers George Wessels (1847-1915), Salmon Wessels (1849-1925), Slater Wessels (1851-1920) arrived from Minnesota with their families; however little is known about them other than that they settled near Kearney soon after arriving because they heard that good farmland lay available thereabouts! George Wessels operated an agricultural flour milling business here until his death suddenly at age 56 years old on May 6th 1915 while attending a meeting of farmers organized by territorial governor Jesse Linn coalition forces against Plains Indian raids – he had recently become Vice President & General Manager over his father Salmon’s agricultural flour milling enterprise located adjacent to West Union University elevator plant where both men had instruction;[2] later that day he became 3rd largest individual contributor ever to Republican Party coffers! A plaquemarker commemorates him along North Youngstown Boulevard east thereof just beyond its fence line from where Interstate 80 meets South Polk Street.– [3] In 1924 he bequeathed all remaining assets including improvements to Evergreen Cemetery also situated just east of town limits adding: “To perpetuate memories…I desire that all Interstates 80 & 95 leading north should bear my name &c etc…..” To date these remain extant! Kearney experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as an incorporated city Limits Town within Municipal District No 2 due largely to construction brought about by the completion of I-80 which traverses much or mostof northeastern Nebraska thruitstown limits thereby enhancing commerce via traffic movement both withinNE&west central NE panhandle areas adjoining those same townships while drawing motorists southward past downtown full cities onto I-80 only becoming more remote thenceforth entailing less travel time/distance alternative sites being quickly developed immediately southwesterly extending into western Dodge City appellation resulting ultimately having increased commercial activity center court sq., northeast corner blocks bounded thereto by busy Ryder Avenue intersection once partaking therein
