Kearney, Nebraska is a small town located in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hawkeye City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Kearney post office was established in 1881 and discontinued operation in 1969. The early settlers of Kearney were farmers who came from Illinois and Iowa. They built their first homes near the present day intersection of Eighth and Center Streets in 1878. By 1886, many of the original settlers had died from various diseases brought over by the pioneers to this new land. A group of men led by John Larkin founded the Sidney Railroad and Hubbard & Son operated it until 1907. In that year, they merged with the Burlington Northern Railway to form the Omaha Union Pacific Railroad (OUP). In 1915, James Hodge became president of OUP and he made available for lease land east of Kearney on Seventh Street for a large chemical plant to be developed by his brother-in-law Drury Whetstone and Company. After World War I ended, OUP acquired additional land east of Kearney for military purposes; these lands were later developed into what is now downtown Kearney. The industrial revolution began in earnest in America during the late 1800s with advances made in technologies such as oil shale production and transportation via railroads across North America which opened up new markets for goods produced hereabouts including beer, beef cattle, cottonseed oil, wheat flour and other products exported back homerenewed demand for American manufactured goods abroad which created jobs within American factories directly or indirectly responsible for increased economic growth throughout much of 1916 through 1920 when President Wilson became reelected following his landslide victory over Mr Taft (see: "Election results" article). On July 8th 1916 a group led by James Hodge along with others purchased 4 percent interest in Consolidated Grain Elevator Co., one of America's largest grain elevators having capacity to process 25 million bushels per day on 5 acres adjacent to old Southern Ryde warehouse on Eighth Street since 1865; this purchase marked commencement (and eventual success) of both James Hodge's political career as well as Cornhuskerland Brewery which would become one of America's leading breweries thanks largely to its relationship with Olderman Brewing company also founded by James Hodge! This acquisition also gave rise to local legend that when General Pershing visited Omaha during World War I he remarked upon how clean everything looked--a statement that has been attributed variously to General George Crocker or First Lady Alice Paul but most likely originated with JH Dodge himself! With more than two hundred years behind us it is interesting that many aspects connected thereto still remain today including Cornhuskerland Brewery's continuing role as an important employer within our community providing several thousand local jobs annually direct or indirect including apprenticeship opportunities!
