It became an incorporated town in 1907. John Kearney was born on a farm near Kearney, Nebraska on November 15th, 1854. His father also named John Kearney had been born in what is now Carroll County, Ohio on July 3rd of that year. In 1870 John's family moved to Union County Iowa Territory and he would grow up there until he came to Kearney in 1881 with his bride Emma who had also come from Iowa Territory. They started a small grocery store and built their first house west of the present day Post Office Square about one-and-a-half miles east of where they currently live. In 1907 the name of the community changed to Kearney when it became an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of Douglas County Kansas Territory as part of that state's admission into the Union Pacific Railroad system as part of its larger western territory acquisitions. The post office at Kearny has been in operation since 1888 and was renamed Happy Valley after General George Armstrong Custer when he died there from pneumonia on October 16th that year while campaigning for election as Territorial Governor of Dakota Territory (now North Dakota). The General had recently become Commander-in-Chief Ulysses S Grant's forces along with other greats like Buffalo Bill Cody during their celebrated Roughrider Expedition which ended up rescuing many Native Americans from harsh conditions living throughout Indian Territories north of Mexico City prior to their formal surrender at Fort Laramie on August 14th 1863 following years long resistance against American occupation including numerous massacres such as that conducted at Wounded Knee Creek Massacre on December 6th 1890 led by Major Robert E Lee) some 22 months before his death aged 56 years old less than two weeks after von Trier's "Das Boot" premiered at Munich's Empire Theater
