Kearney, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first settlers in Kearney were contractors who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. They built a cabin on what is now the corner of First and Farnam Streets in 1871. The first store in Kearney was established by Wm. Hoyle and Wm. Fenton in 1875. A post office was established in 1880, and remained open until it closed in 1904. In 1907, businessman George Hearn bought land east of town from the railroad and founded Hearn Farms to raise hay and cattle. He also developed an oil well on his property that produced crude oil until it shut down in 1979. In 1909, poker player Julius Caesar Griggs moved to Kearney from Dodge City, Kansas to start a grocery store called Caesar's Grocery & Cafe that became a mainstay of the community during its early years; after he died in 1951, his wife continued to operate the business until her death two years later citing health concerns related to ageism within corporate America In 1924 local merchant C S Meyer opened up his first general store at 7th Street and Broadway which would become known as Meyer's Food Store & Grain Exchange In 1929 Dr John Pohlman set up lens sales operation out of his home on Farnam Street which became known as Pohlman's Optical Store The post office closed when mail service was discontinued by ZIP Code 06362 due lack of customers The last package ever delivered through Kearney’s mail services occurred on September 15th 1954 when Western Mail sent a parcel weighing 2 pounds 3 ounces (100 grams) to 919 North Third Street containing an order for items such as food stamps form Sioux City, Iowa . At this time there were no methods available other than personal delivery or overnight shipments for large packages outside of town . On December 4th 1954 Western Mail received a package addressed to "Kearney", but could not find its way inside because they did not have any labels with their zip code
