However, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, things began to change when new Mayor Tom Naylor brought more money into town through taxation initiatives such as funding forlocal libraries and parks; he also announced plans for revitalization of downtown Kearny with new restaurants and retail businesses. These projects have helped revive downtown since they were implemented in 1992-1993 In recent years there has been a resurgence in interest in downtown Kearny following several developments: Namely redevelopment around Empire Place (formerly known as "The Arches"), construction of a new library on Third Street NE.,[4][5] development along Broadway Avenue NW., both east side streets being renamed MacBride Boulevard after local citizens who donated land for that purpose,[6][7][8][9][10] renovation/construction of Main Street south from Eighth Avenue northward,[11][12] addition of Art Gallery at Sixth Avenue SW.,[13][14] now called "Downtown Arts District".
