One such pistol was the Colt Model 1851 Rifle, which became one of the most popular handguns in America during the late 19th century. In 1922, Kearney became a city and its own police department was established. This led to increased demand for gunparts throughout the community. The first gun in Kearney was a muzzleloader, made by Nicholas Dodd in 1851. The first guns were used for hunting and target shooting. In 1875, the town of Kearney got its own Firearms License from the State of Nebraska. The first handgun was imported from Europe in 1889.
Kearney is a small town in the Nebraska corn belt. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Kearney is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-West Omaha metropolitan area. The downtown core is home to the Kearney Civic Center and Kearney Police Department. The first people to live in what is now Kearney were farmers who gathered around a large wooded area near present day North First Street and Rural Road in 1855. They called this area "The Woods". After some time, they moved east and started clearing land for farming on what is now West Side Drive. In 1881, James Fenton bought 640 acres of land from the local Indian tribe for $1,000 dollars which became known as "Fenton's Field". At this time, it was one of the largest tracts of farmland in Nebraska. In 1907, when Nebraska changed its name to Kearny County, John Fenton donated 1/4 acre of his farm for county seat purposes. Because he had given away so much land in previous years, many people thought that he must have died rich because no one has ever been able to find any evidence to back up this claim (although there are references to him being dead since 1861). However, when it was found out that he still lived and breathed rural life style and spent most of his time at his farmhouse (which still stands today), everyone got excited about finally having their own county seat! In 1919, George Cramer donated 4 acres north of present day First Street for use as a jail which served as the primary jail until 1959 when it was replaced by Interstate 80 traffic court building which still stands today! To celebrate its centennial year in 1969-1970 (an event planner recommended that we do something special during our anniversary year!), Kearney erected an iron gate with an inscription reading "Erected 1909" at South First Street which marks where Cramer donated his land! Today's community began developing after World War II when families came here looking for new opportunities after being displaced by warring factions throughout Europe. Many businesses were born out of necessity due to wartime shortages such as travel ban restrictions or rationing; like gasoline station owners who had to sell everything including gasoline just so they could get by without running into trouble with government officials! Other entrepreneurs who took advantage during these tough times include: a truck driver who opened a service garage; two electricians who built several homes; two carpenters who erected several homes - both men worked exclusively from their cars while on business trips; four men who ran a barbershop; three women ran their own businesses - all except one woman opened gift shops while also working - this ladies shop became known as 'The Gertrude'. Today’s town began taking shape with many businesses clustering together on Wellesley Avenue outside of downtown while other streets within town developed more independently over time like Main Street which eventually became Main Street Bridge Road
