Kearney, Nebraska was founded in 1869 by Myron Kearney and his party of settlers. The town was named for General John A. Kearny, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first store in Kearney was built on Center Street in 1872. In 1886, the town had a population of 350 people and a post office. In 1916, the townsite was acquired by Omaha and became part of that citys district. The townsite reverted to Kearney in 1938 when Omaha annexed it into its city limits. Today, Kearney is a small neighborhood located near the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. The history of Kearney begins with two men: Myron Kearney and John A. Kerny II. Both men wererought over from Ireland as soldiers during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Afterward, they decided to settle what is now known as Kearny County, Nebraska Territory on August 15th, 1869 while still serving their time in the Union Army under General Ulysses S Grant’s command. In December 1870, Myron received word that General Scott’s forces had invaded Mexico and occupied Southern California; therefore he elected not to return home to help care for his father who had passed away just four months earlier from an illness contracted during the war effort back east (myron also lost three brothers fighting at Gettysburg). He instead took his family westward towards what would become Omaha City Limits after learning about it from another soldier living thereabouts – Jacob Wetterling Luxemburg! Upon arrival back East on January 1st 1870 aboard USS Quincy (CA-5) following an arduous journey across Lake Placid Harbor – one which required days ashore due to bad weather conditions – he learned that his father had predeceased himğün son Wayne also enlisted early into the Union army but never completed high school so he could serve only three years before being mustered out at 26 years old! From this experience myron learned both how important it is for young men like himself to have some form of education upon retirement so that they can provide “a better life for their children” should they choose such a career path later on instead of becoming “just another farmer or laborer” as many Americans did then & continue doing today thanks moreso than ever before to advancements made within our society/ economy etc etc etc etc….. Kearney was founded in 1854 by Isaac Kearney and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for the Kearneys' donation of land to the Nebraska Territory. In 1875, Kearney became a city after it was laid out by Captain John A. Farnsworth. The first Mayor of Kearney was George Ladd.
