Kearney, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kearney was founded in 1854 by US Army Captain John J. Kearny and his wife Mary Jane Ellis as a military camp on the west bank of the Missouri River near present-day Omaha. The first post office in Kearney was established in 1865. The town name is derived from Irish settlers John Kearny and his wife Bridget O'Neill who arrived in 1854 and named their new settlement after General James Kelleher's brother-in-law Colonel Cornelius Doherty (1800–1868), also an Irish immigrant and fur trader with ties to Ireland. In 1907, when Nebraska became a state, Kearney became its capital city and has remained so since then. In 1912, the town erected its first Carnegie Library which still stands today; it served as both a cultural center for the community and library until 1978 when it moved to its current location on Main Street. In 1928, construction began on what would become one of America's largest civic park systems; today known as downtown Kearney Park%, this system included three blocks of artificial turf soccer fields (the first such facility in America) as well as two baseball diamonds (one now used for football games). On July 4th 1916 – just weeks before World War I started – Kearney residents celebrated American Independence Day with a parade through downtown streets culminating at Union Station where refreshments were served before fireworks displays concluding at duskfall.

The city has experienced many changes throughout its history. In 1964, it was renamed Omaha after the nearby Omaha World-Herald newspaper chain's purchase of The Great Western Newspapers Company. The name change coincided with an effort to increase tourism in the city and promote Omaha as a cultural destination. In 2009, Kearney became part of Lincoln County when it was combined with other localities within that county. Today, Kearney is home to a variety of businesses and residents, including farmers, ranchers, educators, professionals, and entertainers. One notable event from its history occurred on October 17th, 1976 when Ronald Reagan paid his respects at Union Pacific Railroad station before delivering his inaugural address from atop the train engine there.

During the early years of the 20th century, a number of businesses were built and operated in Kearney including a brewery, lumber yards, mechanics shops and more. By 1920, there were only two remaining businesses left operating within the town limits - a grocery store and a post office. In 1924, local resident Artie Shearer donated land to be used as an airport for Kearney. This helped make the town an important transportation hub for both locals and visitors during the early 21st century. Today, Air Force One spends most of its time at nearby Omaha International Airport while other planes such as Amtrak service many neighboring communities within easy reach.
