In 1870, a school was built in Kearney to help teach local children how to read and write. In 1907, the state legislature passed an act creating the Kearney Indian School which continues to be used today for primary and secondary education for Native American children from all over Nebraska. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson visited America and made it known that he wanted America's future to be represented by Native Americans as well as whites. This led to a new era of development for Kearny; businesses started coming into town and people began buying land here so they could start their own businesses. Today, many things continue to grow here such as music, art, agriculture and industry. The community has also been through some tough times but has always bounced back with support from its citizens. For example, on July 4th of 2015, when monsters smashed through windows of a nearby business making national headlines (the attack that left four people dead), residents came together with food storage containers and drums to form what became known as "Kearney's Monster March." They marched down Main Street singing song after song until they reached the building where they took down crosses decorating it in memory of those who had lost their lives that day! This event helped show everyone just how much support there really is within this small town!

Kearney was founded by the Kearney and Dodge families in 1867. It became a city in 1969, and is the county seat of Kearney County. The city is home to the Kearney Museum of Nebraska History and Culture, as well as several other cultural attractions. The town first arose on high ground overlooking the Omaha River, then developed along its current route through center-of-town streets with spacious lotss leading to churches, schools and businesses. At first small farmers farmed on their land while they gathered materials for trade or construction projects; later roads linked these outlying farms into what we now know as downtown Kearney. In 1868 merchants from Omaha organized a group to build a bridge over the river which would connect Omaha with Kearney and make this area more accessible. The new town soon replaced wagon days when goods were brought downriver for sale by boat or train. A post office was established in 1870 and growth continued until 1886 when an ordinance created night trading hours so that people could get work done during darkness without fear of being caught up in traffic jams caused by early morning departures from Omaha . A fire destroyed much of downtown in 1886 but progress resumed under new management including dredging of the river which completed business improvements eastward along Main Street . The city's population peaked at around 100 residents in 1890 census but declined rapidly due to variety of causes such as large numbers moved away during the Great Depression (1929-1939) , loss of jobs due to railroads closing down (1930s), prohibition (1920s), World War I draft riots (1890s), etc.; however, population resurgence began after WWII with returning veterans creating many opportunities for employment within town limits; today’s total population is approximately 3500 residents
