Kearney, Nebraska is home to the first gun barrel factory in the United States. The factory was founded by George Biddle in 1859 and continued production until it closed in 1907.
Kearney, Nebraska is a small town in the Lincoln County seat of Kearney. The population was 3,635 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River about west of Omaha and east of Lincoln. The first Europeans to visit Kearney were French traders in 1768-1769 who named it "Cerro Gordo" after a mountain in New Mexico. In 1812, United States troops destroyed an Indian village near what is now Kearney while seeking revenge for the death of General James K. Polk's father, Lt. Colonel George Mifflin Polk Jr.. The large earthworks that remain today are one result of this battle. In 1854, Kearney became part of Nebraska when Nebraska Territory was created from parts of Kansas and Iowa Territory. The townsite at what is now Kearney was platted by Horace Greeley in 1855 as his new town site on land which he owned along the riverbank south of present-day Omaha. In 1870, a post office was established at Kearny with Averill Harriman as its first postmaster; it remained in operation until 1955. The first store opened in 1870: Davenport & Clark Store No 1 (now First National Bank). A sawmill opened soon afterwards and continued operating until 1906; other early businesses included a bakery (1871), grocery store (1872), harness shop (1875), grist mill (1878), livery stable (1901) and hotel/motel complex built 1912-16 known as "The Old Hotel". A train depot served as the terminus for local trains serviced by railroads running through central Nebraska until 1949 when passenger service ended due to budget cuts caused by World War II; Amtrak still operates local trains between Omaha and Kearney via Hastings Junction every day except Sunday during summer months Although corn farming initially dominated economic life hereabouts, irrigation techniques developed subsequent to Lake Nebraskas construction beginning around 1930 helped bring heavy industry into this area including manufacture/export operations for IBM then Dell before their move away from Omaha following World War II agricultural production has since resumed with livestock ranching becoming increasingly important although crop production remains dominant
