Kearney was founded in 1868 by James Kearney and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then won the battle of Palo Alto against Spanish forces. The Kearneys were pioneers in Nebraska Territory and their house is still standing at 5th and Farnam Streets. Kearney became a railroad town in 1889 with the arrival of the Omaha, Lincoln & Northwestern Railroad. In 1907, the Omaha National Guard Armory was built on Main Street. It served as the headquarters of the Nebraska Department of Military Affairs until it was destroyed by a fire in 1966. The Kearney Grange Museum is located on Farnam Street near 4th Avenue south of Interstate 80.
Kearney was founded in 1867 by pioneers John and Mary Kearney. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a new railroad line that connected Omaha with Kansas City. In 1902, Kearney became the county seat of Kearney County.
