From 1892 until the early 1920s, Hastings was a thriving community in central Nebraska. It had a population of around 1,500 and boasted a variety of businesses and residences. These companies were responsible for designing, manufacturing, testing, marketing, selling, and supporting various types of optical equipment used by soldiers during World War I and World War II. In 1922-23*, Hastings experienced a significant change when local businessman Harry Fenton purchased two new sawmills on the east side of town from owner Beardsley Hargrave.* He immediately began investing in new technology which would soon impact his business empire: he developed electronic papercutting machines* which revolutionized papermaking; he founded the first radioastronomy observatory in America; and he established one of Omaha’s leading printing presses.* These investments helped establish Harry Fenton Company as one of Nebraska’s leading telescope producers.* In fact*, during these years *Hastings’ scopes production increased more than fivefold!* This increase can be partially attributed to technological advances such aselectronic media* which allowed for greater transparency and accuracy when producing images*. Additionally*, due to newly available resources such as money supplied by USAID(*USAID supported Harry Fenton Company through their efforts at creating four television broadcasting stations across Omaha*)* Fury optics became well-known throughout the country for their high quality products. As a result*, sales increased even further at both company locations!
