In 1898, Hastings, Nebraska was the site of a gunfight where two American track teams were competing. The political nature of the event led to the town’s nickname “Gun-Hastings” and it remains an important location in town history today.
Hastings, Nebraska is a small town in the state of Nebraska, located on the Missouri River. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Hastings is one of five towns in Lincoln County and it is the county seat. The first settlers to Hastings were led by Captain James Webster and his family who arrived in 1798. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the Misouri River. The Websters built another cabin on what is now Main Street in 1804. In 1806, Captain John Wilkinson built a two-story frame house on Fourth Street which served as the courthouse for many years until it burned down in 1865. In 1882, Hastings became part of Lincoln County when it was created from part of Douglas County. It was formally incorporated as a town on December 15, 1886. As one of its tasks, Hastings erected a schoolhouse and other public buildings during that year. The first post office opened in 1888 and continued to serve until 1935 when it closed due to lack of mail service to the community after being moved to Omaha City Limits that year. The current building which stands today on Main Street was built in 1951 by my father-in-law Harry Shearer who also served as its first director. It has been home to Hastings High School since 1959 and also serves as the primary cultural center for surrounding farming communities including Cut Bank (west), North Platte (northwest), Holland (south) and Malta (east). Hastings also hosts several annual events such as cornhuskers football games against neighboring Cut Bank or Holland or Horse Show events organized by nearby rural churches with participation from both students and adults from throughout central Nebraska

When Hastings, Nebraska was founded in 1868 by Capt. George Armstrong Custer, it was one of the most remote and sparsely populated areas in the United States. Today, Hastings is a thriving town with a rich cultural history that has been passed down through its residents and businesses for more than 125 years. Hastings was first settled by Norwegian farmers in the early 1800s. The area became known as "The Foothills" because of its high mountain ranges and fertile soil. By the late 1800s, however, many of the original Norwegian settlers had died from disease or battlefield injuries during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, Captain George Armstrong Custer transferred ownership of part of what is now Hastings to his friend and fellow Nebraska Territorial Governor John A. Sikes. With this new land grant, Custer signaled a new era for Hastings - one where people would come to live and work in his fledgling community based on their talents and abilities rather than their geographic location. In less than two decades, Hastings had become an important center for commerce and education in eastern Nebraska Territory. By 1887, there were over 20 businesses operating in town including groceries stores, millinery shops, schools (including one taught by Drury), churches (including one built on prominent Hillcrest Avenue), hotel rooms,and doctor's offices. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to waves of arrivals from Scandinavia and other parts of Europe who sought opportunities to earn a living amid Prohibition-era America. In 1907 alone, more than 100 people arrived at Hastings from Norway alone - making it one of America's largest influxes of immigrants since World War II! During the 1920s and 1930s, Hastings experienced rapid growth due to its status as an agricultural center - responsible for developing much of eastern Nebraska's farmland around which other businesses developed over time! The post-World War II boom brought about increased economic opportunity for everyone in town - until relatively recently when downtown business activity has declined significantly while housing prices have gone up considerably
Hastings was founded in 1881 by George Hastings and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly in the late 1800s, thanks to its location on the Missouri River and its access to resources such as water, timber, and land. By 1907, Hastings had a population of 2,500 people. In 1916, the town became an independent city.
