Hastings, Nebraska is a town in Harper County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Hastings is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. The Hastings post office has been in operation since 1887. The first white people to live in Hastings were Rasmus Rasmussen and his family who arrived on July 4, 1854 from Norway. They erected a cabin on what is now the corner of First and Mission Streets. Early residents included Methodist missionary John Wessels and his wife Mary who came in 1858 with their children Isaac and Christina Alderney Wessels; Rasmus's father-in-law Jacob Weilandt (1815-1892); brothers Solomon Schafer (1841-1912) and George Wessels (1846-1927). In 1865, Hastings was platted by Peter Kapp as part of an effort to organize land grants for settlers near Omaha City. In 1867, James Tillet purchased 640 acres from Rasmus Rasmussen for $3 per acre ($72 per square mile). This purchase formed the nucleus of present day Hastings when it split off from neighboring Northfield Township about two years later due to differences over water rights and ownership of Indian land within that township boundaries. The first store built in Hastings was operated by Jobe Hanchett under the name "Hastings Store" on Second Street between Elm and Church Streets in 1887. The store closed its doors around 1915 but reopened in 1922 as "Jobe's Hardware".
