Hastings, Nebraska is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Hastings is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hastings post office was founded on November 3, 1868. The town name comes from Hasting's Ferry which crossed the Iowa River near present-day Hastings. There were other places called Hastings before it became a town and this is where the first store in Hastings opened up on October 17, 1870. The first school was built in 1872 and it was only after that that people started coming to Hastings to live and raise families. In 1907 there were 105 businesses in Hastings with a payroll of $1 million dollars! By 1925 there were only 17 businesses left but they still had a payroll of $2 million dollars! In World War II the community came together to help support the war effort by manufacturing goods for military use such as radios and tanks. In 1946 when President Harry S Truman visited Hastings he announced plans for Interstate 90 which would run through town center just south of the bridge over Iowa River that would cross into neighboring Omaha. This project eventually led to the creation of Nebraska State University and made possible many new homes being built in Hastings during those years! Today there are 2 churches (Church of Christ ( America) and First Baptist Church) as well as several small businesses including three gas stations, four restaurants/cafés, two auto dealerships, one Doctor’s Office/Gymnasium/Shopping Center and one hardware store open along with four beauty salons & six hair stylists! There are also several thousand residents who call downtown their home as well as dozens of school children who attend schools located just east of downtown!
