In 1881, a group of businessmen in Hastings, Nebraska, started the first optical store in the city. The store was called the Hastings Optic Company and it was located on State Street. The company was run by George Haggerty and his son-in-law, Nathan Cook. In 1902, the company moved to its current location on First Avenue in Hastings. In 1932, the Hastings Optic Company merged with another business, the Omaha Optical Store Company, to form Omaha Optical Corporation. The company operated until 1975 when it merged with Mid-America Broadcasting Corporation to form Mid America Broadcasting Corporation Holdings Incorporated.
Hastings, Nebraska is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3,886 at the 2010 census. Hastings has been the home of the Hastings-Omaha Dole Company since 1911. It is also the site of Hastings State Fairgrounds and Hastings High School. The first settlers to what is now Hastings came from Holland in 1854. They named their new community after General George Armstrong Custer who had fought in the American Civil War and received a Medal of Honor for his actions that year. The town was founded on a farmstead donated by John Davenport and his family in 1855. Davenport's nephew, Olin Davenport, donated land for a sawmill and gristmill which were built on the banks of the Missouri River. In 1905, Jepson Lumber Company began operations in downtown Hastings; it remains one of town's most important businesses to this day. Hastings became an incorporated village in 1908 when residents voted to create their own government with its own police department and fire department. On July 1, 1911, the company towns merged into one municipal government under the name "Hastings-Omaha Dole Company Town". The company towns continued to operate separately until they were combined into one municipality under that name on January 1, 1972.
