Hastings is a small town in central Nebraska, located about 30 miles (48 km) south of Omaha. The population was 24,752 at the 2010 census. Hastings is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. Hastings has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfc" on climate maps. The town site was founded by George Prentice in 1868 as a trading post on the Missouri River. He named it after his birthplace in England, Hastings Cathedral. In 1872, Prentice built a log cabin and began to trade with the Sioux and Ponca Indians. In 1876, he erected a schoolhouse and store building which remain today as landmarks in Hastings. In 1880, Harry Wiltse established an oil refinery near Hastings while working for the Union Pacific Railroad Company as its pumps superintendent. Wiltse's refinery produced gasoline and kerosene until 1935 when it closed due to competition from gasoline stations owned by Interstate Oil Company subsidiary American Petroleum Institute (API). In 1925, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Hansen bought land north of Hastings and started farming what would become known as Hansen Ranch; the first crop was raised in 1928 using primitive methods including hilling hayricks over mounds of manure created by their father before he died. In 1931 they developed an irrigation system that allowed them to grow corn for export to Mexico City where it was used to make flour for Mexican cuisine. After World War II ended there were few opportunities for agriculture so Hansen turned his attention to cattle ranching which continues to be one of the town's mainstay businesses today; also significant are Hansen's truck dealership which opened in 1950 and now employs around 100 people mostly family employees; several hundred acres of farmland adjacent to their farm provide feedlot services for local beef cows; finally many homes built since then dot the landscape: some dating back more than fifty years give this community an unique look that cannot be found elsewhere within similar size or age ranges encountered throughout much larger towns or rural areas across America during that time frame

Hastings, Nebraska is a city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Hastings County. The population was 10,816 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Hastings County and one of the most populous cities in Nebraska, with over 24,000 residents as of 2015. The first permanent settler in Hastings County was Jens Christensen on November 3, 1851 when he bought 5 acres (2 hectares) from Samuel Beardsley. In 1860, George Witte took possession of 640 acres (248 hectares) east of present-day Hastings on what is now known as Witte Road. On October 1, 1865, Nelson Fenton homesteaded land to the southeast of present-day Hastings on what is now known as Fenton Road. On July 21, 1870, an act entitled "An Act for Introducing Christianity into this Territory" was passed by the Nebraska Legislature and signed by Governor John Dillingham. This act provided for religious education for free within certain limits within white settlements in Kearney and Omaha counties; it also created a new government called the Indian Agency which would manage all aspects related to religion including missionary work among Native Americans living east of Omaha City Limits. The first missions were set up along these boundaries: First Congregationalist Mission near Kearney and Stroudsburg Mission near Omaha City Limits – both operated by Reverends Jacob Brownell and Timothy Cutler respectively In 1896 there were only 8 people living in Hastings County; however by 1900 there had grown to more than 20 families who made their home hereabouts Hastings experienced significant growth due to railroad construction through nearby towns beginning in 1892 until 1893 when that activity petered out completely In 1907 General Electric constructed a hydroelectric powerplant at Grand Island Power Station which began operations that year making Hastings one of its primary industrial areas In 1916 American Telephone & Telegraph Company built its first telephone line from Kearney through Hastings to Omaha That same year saw the opening of physical stores located at Ridgway Avenue and Third Street South which eventually became Sears Roebuck & Co . At this point things began to change for Hastings with many businesses moving away or shutting down as phone service became available throughout much larger cities
