In 1870, a man named John Hastings purchased land in the town of Hastings, Nebraska. The Hastings family would live there for over 150 years and continue to produce fine leather goods. In 1971, the company was sold to Dick's Sporting Goods. Today, Dick's Sporting Goods continues to make holsters for both personal and law enforcement use.

Hastings is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 943 at the 2010 census. Hastings was founded in 1875 by Lorenzo Hastings and named for his father, Major General George Hastings. The original town plat included a school and hotel. It grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in the area in 1907 and began to take on its current form as a small community when it became part of the Great Plains National Wildlife Refuge. The first store opened in 1908, and within two years there were four stores and ninety-six residents. By 1915, there were twelve businesses with a total payroll of $5,611. In 1916, Hastings had six churches with 304 worshipers; by 1920, there were thirteen churches with 3,865 worshippers. In 1927–1928, Hastings experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed thirty homes and injured forty-five people; this event helped spark interest in land management that led to the establishment of Harvey Field State Park. In 1931–1932, Hastings experienced its second tornado outbreak which injured twenty-eight people; this event also helped spur interest in land management that led to the establishment of Hastings Municipal Airport. Since 1959, when Omaha City Council became an Incorporated Business District (IBD), Hastings has been served by IBD members who are elected from wards rather than individual councilors because IBDs provide more services including zoning reformulation and development coordination than individual city councils can offer without duplication or lack of resources In 2006/2007 there was significant growth due to construction on Interstate 80 bypassing town boundaries making it possible for new residents within town limits without having to leave their homes or change their lifestyle
On October 6, 1874, Hastings, Nebraska was named in honor of General George Armstrong Custer.
