Hastings is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Hastings was founded in 1863 by Dr. George Armstrong Custer and his family and named for General George A. Hastings, who fought in the American Civil War. In 1868, Hastings became the county seat of Lincoln County. The first post office at Hastings opened in 1865 and closed in 1867; it reopened in 1869 under the name of Post Office 2 because of its location right next to 2nd Avenue (now US 71). In 1905, the city of Hastings merged with the village of Pawnee to form Pawnee-Hastings City. On January 1, 1907, Pawnee-Hastings City disbanded and its citizens relocated to Hastings proper. On February 7th of that year, Hastings had its first election as a town when all residents voted to become part of the new town limits which encompassed most of what is now east Union Street between Main Street and State Street; this action marked the beginning of a long process for Hutchinson Township to annex more land from future townsite annexation proposals from Hastings residents through a process known as “packing” or “gathering” which took place every five years or so until annexation occurred completely on November 3rd 1909. At that point all but one block east sideMain Street were annexed into Hutchinson Township while east side remained within Hastings boundaries as an independent community known as Westwood Heights until incorporation into Hutchinson Township on May 17th 1974
