The history of gun grips in Hastings, Nebraska can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was a part of Missouri and was under the jurisdiction of what is now Kansas. One of the first men to settle in Hastings was Joshua Hildebrandt, who arrived in 1820. He built a log cabin on what is now Fourth Street corner First Avenue. Mr. Hildebrandt was a German immigrant and his family had several children who also settled in Hastings. In 1825, Michael Kapp bought land near present day Second Avenue and Third Street and began to expand his farm by planting corn, wheat, oats, potatoes and other crops. In 1827 he sold his land to John Fremont for $4 per acre. Mr. Fremont then donated two acres of land adjacent to his farm to the town of Hastings for use as a public square. The cornerstone for the first courthouse was laid on November 3rd, 1830 by Mayor James Fenton with assistance from Drs. Isaac Morrill and Levi Coffin (the first physician in town). In 1839 Captain Charles Goodspeed established Goodspeed’s Trading Post at Fourth and Main Streets which became an important stop on travelers’ routes traversing Nebraska Territory during its early days as a territory controlled by Missouri. The post operated until 1861 when it moved across state lines to Council Bluffs where it continued operation until 1918 when it closed down due to lack of customers or money donations from those living within Nebraska Territory thereby ending its official history in Hastings! Throughout its years as an important stop on travelers’ routes through Nebraska Territory, Goodspeed’s Trading Post served as both a commercial center for local farmers as well as providing serviceproviding goods/services such as wagon transportation services; ammunition sales; blacksmithing; flour milling; cattle herding; cheese manufacturing; saddlery making etc…. It is interesting to note that there are still remnants remaining today including some old posts along Fourth Street corner First Ave…..
