In that year, citizens of Hastings voted to adopt a municipal ordinance regulating firearms within the city limits. This ordinance establishing City Gun Laws was passed by an overwhelming margin and remains in effect today. One of the earliest notable residents of Hastings was James Wickersham, who arrived in 1847 and began trading goods with Native Americans near present-day Hastings Dam. Wickersham's trade led him to establish himself as one of Nebraska's leading merchants during its early years. Hastings, Nebraska is a small town in north central Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Hastings is located on the Omaha–Council Bluffs Railroad and is part of the Omaha metropolitan area. The first settler in Hastings was George Armstrong Custer who arrived in 1872. The town was named after General David B. Hastings who fought in the Mexican-American War and received the Medal of Honor for his actions there. In 1865, Samuel Morse established a post office in Hastings with six ballots and one letter per vote. In 1871, Cyrus McCormick began shipping Western Union messages from Hastings to other towns in Nebraska and Iowa using horseled wagons pulled by four oxen. It has been said that Without Cyrus McCormick, Omaha would not be its present form as a major city today. After hearing about Morse's accomplishment, General James Kossuth traveled to Hastings to pay his respects and offer congratulations on behalf of all Missourians west of the Mississippi River when he entered Lincoln on April 14, 1865: "This place I enter thinking it will never be without him." Hastings experienced some growth during World War II with many citizens enlisting or serving in service to their countries including several hundred women who worked at three local munitions plants near Hastings while also taking classes at nearby Tiffin College which later became Tiffin University. The war resulted in an increase of residents and businesses moving into town which helped make it more vibrant during peacetime until changes occurred such as oil spills that destroyed much of downtown property; this event led to a decrease in business activity but still allows for some interaction between locals and tourists here today known as "Hastingsfest". Since its founding over ninety years ago, Hastings has had support from numerous philanthropic organizations such as Stearns County Foundation (now Hancock Community Foundation), Salvation Army & Knights Hospitals/Kansas City Missionaries International Society (KCMIS), Masonic Lodge #2 (Lodge No 7) which provides scholarships for students attending local high schools; Presbyterian Church - UMW First National Bank merger fundraising effort; community events like Harvest Festival held annually fall autumn weekend since 1943; nominate someone you know!

In 1881, a post office was established in Hastings and quickly became popular due to its location close to both Omaha and Council Bluffs. The growth of Hastings led to the creation of many businesses including a bank, grocery store, laundromat, doctor's office and more. During World War II, Hastings played an important role in providing food for troops stationed on Omaha Beach. In 1945, Mayor Harry Lammers donated landbases on which tanks could be built for use during Operation Overlord which resulted in America's victory over Nazi Germany. AfterWWII ended, many businesses closed down or were sold off within months of their inception due to changes in economic times throughout the Midwest such as deregulation and structural unemployment among other factors In recent years there has been some redevelopment activity taking place within downtown Hastings with mixed results according to some residents The current mayor of Hastings is Jeffery Purdy who took office on January 1st 2018
