This early ammunition was used for hunting and target shooting. The first commercial ammunition manufacturer in Hastings was Dennison Arms Company which was founded in 1892. The company produced a variety of personal defense munitions including shotguns, pistols, and rifles. In 1912, the Hastings Rifle Club formed which became a major force in the ammunition industry in Hastings. The club produced its own rifle cartridges and imported other types of rounds from other manufacturers. In 1916, the club voted to establish a factory to produce live fire shotgun shells. The new factory became one of the most important arms factories in Hastings until it closed its doors in 1978. In 1938, Winchester Ammunition Company established itself as an ammo manufacturer in town with production beginning on .22 caliber handguns. It continued to make handguns into the late 1990s when it merged with Remington Firearms Company. At that time, Winchester Ammo also became one of Nebraska's largest privately held businesses with over $2 billion invested across more than 60 subsidiaries worldwide (including manufacturing plants located outside of Omaha). Today, Hastings remains an important center for commerce and culture with a population of over 15,000 people
