The name of the town derived from an 1854 treaty between the United States and Great Britain which saw Grand Island ceded to America in exchange for land east of Omaha. The town was founded by pioneers in 1855, after they discovered gold ore on their homesteads near what is now Grand Island. In 1860, construction began on a railroad station that would cross over the Missouri River into Nebraska Territory and connect with other eastern markets. The growth of agriculture and industry led to a rise in population over time – from 350 residents in 1870 to 2,100 by 1910. Today, Grand Island remains one of the most densely populated towns in Nebraska with more than 2600 people living within its borders. In recent years, Grand Island has seen strong investment from businesses such as Googleplex and energy companies including Enbridge Energy Partners LP (EHP) and shale gas producer Noble Energy Inc (NEO). The first Europeans to arrive on Grand Island were French trappers in 1810. fur traders and missionaries followed in the 1840s. In 1854, the America Company built a gristmill on the island for grinding wheat into flour for shipment to Chicago via the Erie Canal. The mill closed around 1870, butgrain production persisted until World War I when it all stopped because of wartime restrictions on exports from belligerent countries. In 1915, a group of men led by rancher Amasa Dunlap pooled their money and bought land east of Grand Island for development as a resort town called Miami Beach Resort & Casino. With its white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters; Miami Beach became one of America's leading popular tourist destinations during the 1920s and 1930s. However, withDevelopment came social unrest that surrounded many aspectsof life in post-war America: high taxes (on income alone), joblessness, poor housing conditions and little opportunity for advancement or social mobility after leaving college or working their way up through society's ladder system . After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, developers rushed to build more businesses during an economic boom that continued until late 1960s when recession hit country hard . Many residents left Miami Beach for what they saw as lack of opportunity back home or simply couldn't afford it anymore due to high rents and inflationary prices
