It has a land area of just over 1 square mile (3 km²). As of the 2000 census, there were only 33 people living in Grand Island. Grand Island was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1855, two brothers named Augustus and Andrew Boothe acquired 640 acres (248 ha) of land south of present-day Omaha for $1 per acre ($6/ha). They laid out a village called "Bootheville" on their new property. The village had a post office, schoolhouse, and store. In 1858, George Stephenson built his first railroad between Omaha andCouncil Bluffs via Sioux City. In 1865, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a transcontinental railroad through Nebraska Territory from Council Bluffs to Dodge City. The line was completed by 1870 and became known as the Union Pacific Railway (UPR). Grand Island was incorporated as a town on July 6, 1887. At that time it had a population of just 10 residents. During World War II, Grand Island played an important role in military production as it housed several military plants used in munitions manufacturing including Molineux Arsenal and Triton Arsenal.. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to economic recession which hit both localities hard; however no major changes took place until the 1970s when Interstate 30 bypassed central Omaha creating anew competition for jobs within beltway cities like Omaha etc.. As global economies have changed since then with technological advancements such as cell phone service or even air travel now available all over North America without ever having to leave your home country or city Limits are placed on what kinds of activities can be done within these borders also making it difficult for smaller towns like Grand Island trying to keep up with larger entities With less resources at their disposal There has been an increase in crime rates especially violent crime rates which have impacted social services being offered to residents such as schools providing traffic control during high school dances or other large events which have become more difficult due to lackadaisical attitude from police officers who are stretched thin too make ends meet while keeping public order
In 1871, the first white person to live on Grand Island was James P. Green. Green purchased the island from the Omaha tribe of Sioux for $3,000. The island is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States.
