Grand Island, Nebraska is a small town in Johnson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hastings Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Grand Island were French traders from Québec in 1692. A grant of land and privileges was awarded by the Dutch in 1777 to General John Nicholson for his services during the American Revolution. In 1868, the island was purchased by Captain James Halliburton for $2,000 cash. In 1875, permanent settlers began arrive on Grand Island after being attracted by an offer for one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land east of town made by local officials. By 1880, there were 805 residents on Grand Island including 310 farmers and their families residing on 129 plots of land granted to them free or at low cost from the government under section 562 of the Indian Territory Act of 1830. In 1898 commissioners recommended that all citizens be required to file a tax return but no action was taken until 1907 when a new county was formed and grand island became part of it. In 1911–12 voters passed a resolution endorsing annexation into Lincoln County as proposed by local officials; however this resolution failed to receive enough support from other county leaders to become law In 1933 construction began on what would become known as "The State Capitol" which replaced an earlier courthouse which had been destroyed in 1902 by a tornado . The building opened in 1935 and served as both the state Capitol and court house until it burned down in 1980 . The current capitol building reopened in 2009 after undergoing renovations costing $27 million In 1969–70 white nationalist demonstrators protesting against black integration staged a rally on campus outside the old state Capitol Building before entering through an open window where they set fire to several cars parked inside . Aftermath saw several arrests with some protesters treated for minor injuries while police used teargas and pepper spray
The first permanent settler in the area was George De Witt, who arrived in 1846. The first school on the island was founded in 1847 and became a public school in 1870. The first church on Grand Island was built in 1876. In 1896, the island was annexed by Nebraska and has since been part of that state.
