Grand Island, Nebraska is a town in Lincoln County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 7,557 at the 2010 census. The economy of the town is based on agriculture and manufacturing. Grand Island is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Nebraska were French traders who arrived in 1670 and named their new land "Iowa." In 1855, when Fort Riley was established onpresent-day Kansas City National Military Park as part of a military campaign to drive off Native Americans from their holdings in Missouri and Iowa Territories, Major General John J. Pershing decided to establish an Indian reservation within present-day Nebraska Territory. On March 22, 1856, Congress passed the Organic Law of Nebraska which created Grand Island as one of four reservations within that territory; it lay within present-day Lincoln County. In 1865, when the Union army destroyed Fort Hays during its raid on Harper's Ferry near Topeka, Kan., grand island residents went into panic because they thought their town would be next. They took to the hills and prepared for battle but were relieved by Confederate forces just before they reached their destination. The Panic of 1893 characterized farm prices throughout much of America due to unseasonable weather conditions that had begun developing earlier in the year across much of North America caused by 1896′s Columbine mountain eruption and accompanying global financial crisis known as “the Great Depression” (Ferguson & Herrnstein). As a result of this depression many small farmers lost access to credit so they could buy equipment or seeds for their crops; this led to increased labor costs associated with those same crops becoming more expensive resulting in less income for farmers overall (Kuhn). This declined demand also decreased crop production leading eventually to increased unemployment or poverty among those impacted due largely to changes brought about by technological advances over time (Bowersox). In 1902 former Territorial Governor James Kapp offered $10 per acre for land eastward from his ranch at Red Cloud Creek which he deemed would become irrigated farmland giving rise to what is now called "Kapp's Hill" development area northeast of today's village center on old tribal hunting ground whereinitially corn harvesting was done between May 1st through October 15th annually (Wiseblood & Ladd); however after years since then no planting has occurred there while other areas have enjoyed good yields including: Bingaman Cornfield west side Rd/ Old Trick Orchard Rd south side Rd near White Sands Missile Range Race Track; all are located outside Village limits GIS boundaries

Grand Island, Nebraska is a small town in Logan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The village of Grand Island was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1907. It became a county town in 1909 and was renamed Grand Island after the grandstand on the University of Nebraska campus. The first settlers to what is now Grand Island were two families who arrived from Iowa in 1867. They built the first permanent log cabin on the site that is now known as "The Cabin." In 1870, three brothers, John Caughey, Charles Caughey and George Weiser bought land from James Aitken for $4 per acre. They started farming it and named their farm "The Bush". The first store in town was opened by Wm Fenton on Main Street in 1907. In 1916, when Omaha City was established across the state line to serve as its capital, Grand Island voters passed an ordinance creating a city government with its own police department and fire department. On July 1 of that year, Great Lakes Bridge Railroad Company President J H Decker petitioned the Nebraska Legislature to create a bridge over Big Sioux River between Omaha City and Grand Island so that goods traffic could be moved between these two cities without having to go through Lincoln. He successfully obtained legislation authorizing this project and General Motors began construction of the bridge on October 15th of that year; it opened to traffic on November 11th of that year. On May 16th of 1938 (the date which follows "Lincoln's Birthday" on modern U.S.) Mayor S R Frey announced at a public meeting held at Intercollegiate Gymnasium at Omaha-Munster College that he had received proposals for incorporation into various townships across central Nebraska but had not yet chosen one for either his city or his township because he wanted to make sure there would be enough competition before making such announcements publicly so as not to upset residents who may have favored one particular incorporation option over another. After much discussion among community leaders about possible incorporations within their respective townships if/when Mayor Frey chose one as his choice rather than waiting until later when more official notification could be given orally or via certified mail (which hadn't been done since Mayor Frey took office), it was decided unanimously by all leaders present that Great Lakes Bridge Railroad Company President J H Decker should be appointed chairman of an exploratory committee formed specifically for this purpose consisting of five members selected by mayor Frey with recommendations from councilors Tom O'Brien (vice president), Joe McNamara (councilor), Bob Lohmeyer ( recorder) and Don Wojnarowski (director). This committee developed plans for forming four incorporations within each township: Clinton Township - Jack McDonald; Fremont Township - Irving Gelbman; Logan County - Art Hite; Plattsmouth Township - Virgil Olson Two weeks later on Saturday night August 3rd 1938 – just days after Mayor Frey made his announcement – great lakes bridge railroad company president j h decker sent out invitations letterhead marked "Election Notice" inviting all citizens residing within ½ mile radius of Intercollegiate Gymnasium located at 6800 block 160TH STREET NEHARESTNEbraskacityofgrandislandtoelectoneonewMayorFreyforCityofOmaha IncorporationNo8_3_38″toformFourCouncilorsPerTownshipWithRecommendationsFromMayorFreyAndAguilerBobLohmeyerForRecorder
