In 1869, when Nebraska was organized as a state, the only city in it was Omaha. The new state had a population of just over 5,000 people and no money to spend on anything but defense. So, to raise money for the army and other government expenses, the legislature authorized a series of sales auctions in town squares across the state. At each sale, merchants could offer goods or services at whatever price they felt like charging. This system is called auctioneering because it allowedNebraskaans to buy and sell what they wanted without having to worry about getting their hands dirty. The first Grand Island auction took place on October 25th of that year. It sold off items such as furniture, clothing, crops, livestock and more than $2,500 worth of goods were sold during the event. The second auction took place on November 1st and this time around there were more than 10 vendors present including printers and storekeepers from Omaha who offered their services for free if onlookers would like to take pictures with them or snap quick photos of the merchandise being offered. This Auction was also attended by Governor John Dickey who gave away several items from his personal collection which included a cannonball from one of America’s most recent wars - the Mexican-American War - as well as some old military documents that he had collected over time. During these two auctions, many local residents met new friends and made valuable connections through commerce while also enjoying some great deals on goodies that they couldn’t find anywhere else. In today’s economy we may not be able to experience these types of events but they definitely remain an important part of Nebraska history!
