In the early 1900s, Grand Island was a small town in Nebraska. The town was founded by Danish immigrants who were looking for a place to start a new life. The first store in the town was opened in 1903 and it was known as the Dutch Bros. Store. In 1912, the first post office was opened in Grand Island and it was called the Dutch Bros. Post Office until it changed its name to the United States Post Office in 1917. In 1929, Grand Island became an incorporated city and it had a population of just over 1,000 people. In 1941, Grand Island became an air force base and it served as an important center for fighter planes during World War II. During World War II, Grand Island also became home to one of America’s largest aluminum smelters which produced aluminum cans and other aluminum products. After World War II ended,Grand Island saw increased development due to its status as an air force base and its location on the Great Lakes region. In 1968, Grand Island became part of Nebraska again and it has since seen continued growth with various industries coming into play such as health care and technology companies. The first large-scale expansion of the Omaha, Nebraska electric utility network took place in 1907 when the Omaha Electric Railway (Omaha) constructed a new line from downtown to North Park. The new line was called the "North Park Line." This line connected with existing lines in South Omaha and Grand Island. In 1927, the Omaha Electric Railway (Omaha) purchased the land east of North High School and built a new substation there. This substation served as the original headquarters for the Omaha Electric Railway (Omaha). In 1933, the Nebraska Legislature passed a bill that authorized construction of an additional electrical line between Grand Island and North Park. The new line became known as the "Grand Island Line." In 1944, two important changes occurred within Grand Island: First, due to World War II, production at Emerson Radio Corporation's plant on West Broadway had increased significantly; second, local resident Harry Kapp decided to invest in electric vehicles instead of gasoline automobiles. Accordingly, Kapp donated his entire collection of radios and other electronics equipment to Grand Island College for use by students. Since then, Emerson Radio Corporation has been an important part of Grand Island's economy and cultural heritage.
Grand Island is a city in Nebraska, United States. The population was 24,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. Grand Island is located in the eastern Great Plains region and has a total area of 21 square miles (55 km²). The first permanent settler on what became Grand Island was David Henderson in 1851. Henderson had come from Kentucky to homestead land near present-day North Platte City. He named his new creation "Grand Island." Other early settlers included John Sorenson and George Fenton. In 1870, James Aiken founded the town of Aiken on what would become Grand Island. By 1890, there were 10 municipalities in Nebraska that formed the state of Nebraska with Grand Island as its capital. In 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Great Falls and found it too difficult to travel by train so he ordered an army unit called the Volunteer Infantry Regiment which marched into Great Falls to improve railroad transportation between Omaha and Great Falls. Roosevelt's visit also stimulated economic development on both sides of the border with Canada by promoting trade between those two nations through his recommendations for better railway construction.. Grand Island, Nebraska is a small town in the US state of Nebraska. It is located in Kearney County and is a part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, Nebraska Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. Grand Island was founded by German immigrants in 1856 as "Gründerstadt" (town). It became an incorporated city in 1907 when it united with Council Bluffs. The city was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died during the Black Hawk War on July 20, 1846, at the age of 27 years old. The first post office on Grand Island was established in 1858. In 1861, it became part of Lincoln; however, it reverted to Kearney County until 1915 when it became an independent municipality once again. On November 3rd 1865, General Ulysses S Grant committed suicide while awaiting trial for treason after leading Union forces into battle at Fort Donelson in Tennessee. After his death, many people believed that Grant had been assassinated by Confederate forces working behind the scenes to take advantage of his situation before he could be tried and executed. President Abraham Lincoln ordered a search for any evidence surrounding Grant's death but found no clues and decided not to pursue charges against anyone involved. In 1895, Gründerstadt merged with Council Bluffs to form one large city under the name Omaha-Council Bluff City; however this merger failed due to objections from Gründerstadt's mayor Clive Wray about how much money Omaha-Council Bluff City would gain from annexing Gründerstadt's land and businesses without giving back any property or money to its citizens. Despite this failure, Omaha-Council Bluff City continued to exist as an independent municipality until 1923 when it merged with Lincoln once again becoming one entity all together known as Grand Island; however this merger also failed due to objections from Mayor Harry Hines about how much control he wanted over both entities' decisions which would have put him above other mayors within Lincolnshire Municipality - something Hines refused to allow happening without compensation from either entity'. After local government consolidation efforts failed multiple times between 1923 and 1933,[2] Nebraska Governor Floyd Bentsen called a meeting of all mayors within Lincolnshire Municipality on December 1st 1933 where he proposed that they merge their municipalities into one larger unit effective January 1st 1934 so that all mayoral decisions made between now and then would be uniform throughout the entire area without having to go through separate meetings each time.[3] This proposal was accepted unanimously by all mayors within Lincolnshire Municipality and on January 1st 1934 Grand Island Municipal Government amalgamated with Lincoln Municipal Government forming one unified government which still exists today despite continuing disagreements between its various parts over decision making power and governance style.[4] During World War II several industries were set up on Grand Island including Shipbuilding & Dry dock Company which built military vessels such as USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Quincy (FFG-41), Powder Works which manufactured munitions such as T blanks used in artillery fire during World War I,[5] Aircraft Factory which produced Boeing B737s[6],[7] Fertilizer Company[8], Beef Packers plant[9], Power Plant(s)[10],[11],[12],[13],[14],[15],[16](see map below).[17][18]) among others; however none reached significant heights nor did they survive beyond 1945 due mainlyto lack of development funding or competition from nearby cities/ Towns who saw their businesses grow rapidly thanks largely to wartime shortages caused by America's participation in World War II".[19][20]. #NamesForthingsOnGrandIslandNebraska # thingsOnGrandIslandNEbraska 6 photos https://thespruceeatsouthwestcoastalbloggingnetworkcom/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/namesforthingsongrandislandnebraska6photos1_.jpg https://www.flickrcdn.com/photos/54627665@N00/namesforthingsongrandislandnebraska6photos1_zpsvogxh0yc
The first Europeans to visit the area were fur traders in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler was Anna Maria Schuyler, who arrived in 1825. She built a cabin on what is now Grand Island. In 1830, the town of Chilton was founded by settlers from Michigan Territory. In 1836, Chilton became part of Nebraska Territory and was renamed Lincoln. In 1861, Lincoln was attacked by Confederate forces and taken by surprise; the city was destroyed and most of its residents killed or captured. The Union victory at Gettysburg led to an increased demand for food and supplies in the area, which caused prices for goods to rise significantly. This led to a trade war with Canada that lasted until 1865. In 1896, Grand Island became part of the newly created State of Nebraska when it split from Iowa Territory. It remained a rural community until after World War II when it began seeing large-scale development as a center for agriculture and industry. Today, Grand Island is home to many businesses and organizations including two universities (Nebraska Wesleyan University and Northern Illinois University), as well as numerous parks and public services
