When oil was discovered in 1901, the town quickly became known as the "oil capital of Nebraska." In 1907, Omaha built an oil refinery on the east side of Grand Island, making it possible for locals to sell their products directly to consumers in Omaha. Grand Island is a small, unincorporated community in Clay County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 3 at the 2000 census. The first settler on Grand Island was John Paxson in 1868. He and his family were the only people living on the island until 1872 when James Haskell bought it from Paxson. Haskell built a cabin and started to cultivate the land. In 1875, he sold the island to George Hanks for $1,000. Hanks began to raise cattle and hogs on Grand Island. He also built a log cabin for himself and his family in 1899. The island remained property of Hanks until 1905 when he sold it to C R Pappas for $10,000. In 1907, Dr J S Hill donated land to make a school on Grand Island which opened in 1909. Later that year, Dr Hill gave another donation of land for an athletic field which served as home field for local high schools from 1911-1915. In 1916, the state legislature voted to rename Grand Island "Nebraska's Iron Hills" after General Douglas MacArthur who had fought in World War I there at Omaha Beach during Operation Overlord; however this name never caught on with residents and reverted back to its original name in 1922-1964 when it finally replaced "Clay County". In 1928-1929 (the same year that Nebraska Statehood was granted), Red Cloud Dairy produced 812 bushels of corn from four acres of farmland located east of town on Ulysses Kellett Road (later known as State Highway 1). This operation became one of few early successes by Red Cloud Farms which would continue operations into present day; however due to changing markets and competition over time their farmstead closed down following World War II but reopened again following Nebraskan agriculture deregulation beginning in 1990 In 1951-1952 (the same year that Lincoln created its first city Limits commission including rural areas within its limits), La Crosse Land & Farming Company organized a planters' market west of town on Center Street between Market Street and Elm Street; however this market failed due lack of patronage by farmers outside of town while also facing competition from larger cities within Nebraska . After years being grazed by cows or used as overflow pastures capacity at various government agencies such as NEAR (now Nebios) National Wildlife Refuge - all efforts failing during dry summers leading up to major floods along Nile River valley resulting most notably near Black Hawk Dam across river - many residents took matters into their own hands founding 'Granite City Marina'; anchored off side shore next arterial street out into open water providing necessary storage/cargo space w/ floating dock & easy access thereto + liveaboards moored side nearest busy harbor allowing visitors unfettered access throughout summer months+ daily schedules seldom changed leading up directly opposite military base Camp Dodge / latter still active today

In 1851, the Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed for the formation of two territories: Nebraska Territory and Illinois Territory. The area that would become Grand Island was part of the Nebraska Territory. In 1861, the United States acquired Iowa Territory from Great Britain. As a result of this acquisition, most Native Americans in Iowa were removed to Oklahoma and Minnesota. The Sioux Tribe also left their land in central Nebraska to migrate to Oklahoma when they were given exemption from US military service during World War I. In 1853, John Custer died in what is now Wyoming while on his way to Indian Wars against Sitting Bull’s Sioux Tribe. This event inspired General George Armstrong Custer to start his own war against the Sioux Tribe known as “the Little Bighorn Expedition” which lasted from July 1st through September 14th 1876 near present day Fort Kearney on South Dakota’s Big Horn Mountains. Many people believe that General Custer was killed by Sitting Bull due to disagreements over food resources within his unit rather than battlefield combat
