Grand Island, Nebraska is a town in Holt County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler on the site of present-day Grand Island was Jesse Cramer in 1855. The area around what is now Grand Island was used for agriculture and ranching until after World War II when it became an important munitions production center in the state of Nebraska. In 1949, Grand Island became home to the first federally recognized Indian tribe in Nebraska when the Pawnee Nation purchased land from John A. Sibley and others. In 1957, with the opening of Interstate 80 through central Nebraska and consequent growth of industry and housing developments around it, much interest developed in downtown Grand Island as a commercial and cultural center for eastern Neb politicians and business people who wished to keep up with Iowa City or Omaha on one side of I-80 and Lincoln or Hastings on the other. This development led to increased public access to downtown areas which had been off limits before; since then there have been numerous additions to what once lay just south of Interstate 80 between 9th Street eastward (now known as State Street) and 10th Street westward (now known as Weiser Boulevard). One result has been that many businesses that were located along 9th Street northbound are now closed because their leases expired or they moved out because of competition from newer stores within walking distance on State Street southbound (now known as Elmwood Avenue). At one time there were several churches within walking distance; these are also no longer extant due to competition from shopping centers more than two blocks away on Elmwood Avenue. Another consequence has been that some abandoned buildings near 9thStreet have become homes for pigeons which can be seen during low tide! In 1875, the Nebraska Territorial Legislature created Grand Island as a part of the Territory. The island was named for General James K. Polk, who died in office in 1847. In 1907, the State of Nebraska acquired the island from the Territory and renamed it after Ulysses S. Grant, Jr., who served as President of the United States from 1865 to 1869.
