The city of Grand Island incorporation occurred on November 3, 1919. As of 2014, Grand island has a total population of 97,711 people living within its limits

Grand Island is a small village located in Nebraska. The population was 5,792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The town of Grand Island was founded by General James Shields in 1854 as a result of his successful campaign to take control of the Dakota Territory from the Sioux Nation. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Missouri River and its access to goods brought over by wagon trains heading north. In 1867, Grand Island became a city and it has since grown into one of the most significant towns in Nebraska. One of the earliest businesses in Grand Island was an grocery store run by George Hildebrand and his brother Jacob Hildebrand. They opened their store on Main Street in 1868. By 1870, they had expanded their business to include a hotel and five stores. The first post office was established in 1871 and named for General James Shields, who had helped lead the town's growth earlier that year. Over time, other businesses took shape within Grand Island: A blacksmith shop operated from 1873-1875; an ice cream parlor opened operation in 1895; a dry goods store and flour mill were built around 1907; and a shoe factory opened operations in 1912. In 1916, during World War I, Grand Island became one of six United States cities (along with Chicago, Indianapolis, St Louis, Newark/ Jersey City, and Tulsa) that received military housing inside their municipal boundaries for soldiers stationed abroad at Camp Dodge Army Airfield near Omaha Airport east of downtown Omaha. After World War II ended, many jobs moved away from Great Falls after producers discovered high quality manufacturing available closer to home elsewhere on the continent such as Germany or Japan than Great Falls itself had been able to find suppliers for its products before war began.. This led to decay within Grande Islemouse over time as people turned towards cheaper alternatives outside civilization while popular cultural attractions like music halls closed or changed hands multiple times until finally being sold off piecemeal during various budget cuts made throughout Nebraskan local government administrations beginning with then-Governor Rick Perry’s administration starting in 2003 until they were completely eliminated beginning with Governor Jan Brewer’s inauguration effective January 1st 2015... Today only traces remain remaining from what once thrived as vibrant community plazas filled with people enjoying summer evenings outdoors under bright sky transparent blue winter conditions sun beating down relentlessly
In 1868, the Nebraska Territory was organized. It included all of present-day Nebraska, as well as Iowa and Minnesota. The territory was divided into two parts: the eastern half (including Omaha) was annexed by Kansas, while the western half (including Lincoln) became part of Colorado. In 1893, Nebraska became a U.S. state.
