A tornado touched down on I-80 just outside of town on May 8, 1965; damage totaled $1 million ($ million today). A second EF5 tornado touched down near downtown Omaha two weeks later and caused more than $10 million ($$ million today) in damages before dissipating over northern Iowa late that night. The first European to visit the Nebraska Territory was Captain John Cook in 1792. Cook named the territory after his home state of Massachusetts. The first white settlements in what is now Nebraska were made by Germans in 1847, and the city of Omaha was founded in 1856. The railroad reached Nebraska in 1861, and a permanent resident population was established in 1902. There have been many changes to the area since then, including World War II when much of central Nebraska was destroyed; the establishment of University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and the arrival of people from Mexico, China, and South America.
