In 1951, Grand Island became home to the world’s first permanent shooting range for shotguns and rifle users when it opened at 7 acres on Sioux City Boulevard. The range has since been expanded multiple times and currently offers over 12 miles of firing lanes for shotguns, pistols, rifles and target shooters. In addition to its range facilities, the town also has a library which provides access to books about firearms and hunting history as well as ammunition resources. Despite its history as an important center for firearms education and research,Grand Island has not seen much recent firearm homicide activity until recently. In 2016 there was only one rifle homicide reported in Grand Island; however this was attributed to rural crime rather than gun violence specifically targeting civilians
