Grand Island is located on the eastern edge of the Great Plains and is bordered by Kansas to the north and east, Iowa to the south and west, and Nebraska to the northwest. The name "Grand" comes from Spanish for "grande" or "large." The area that now makes up Grand Island was first settled by Native Americans in the late 15th century. In 1868, when Omaha territory was split off from Nebraska, part of Grand Island became part of Omaha while much of Douglas County remained with Nebraska. Today's towns of Hastings (on what once belonged to Omaha) and Norwich were both founded in 1871 as settlements near major trade routes leading into Indian Territory. The city filled in many of its old areas with new buildings over time but some vestiges remain including Jack London's bar which still operates today. One important event that occurred during this time was World War I when American troops landed on shore onshore during maneuvers off Omaha Beach near present-day Hastings before Battle of France began two days later.
