Grand Island, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office on Grand Island was established in 1868. The present courthouse was built in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that burned down in 1903. The original grandstand as well as many other buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1922. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. In 2000, Grand Island had a population of 714; however this figure increased to 1,812 at the 2010 census due largely to migration from nearby Council Bluffs and other parts of Kearney County for jobs in Omaha or Kansas City. As such, much of what makes up today's town began as nothing more than Indian Territory until it became an incorporated municipality following statehood in 1912.
The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders in the late 16th century. The first permanent settler was a group of Dutch fur traders in the early 17th century, who built a trading post on Grand Island. In 1806, General James K. Polk and his forces invaded Nebraska and purchased the land from the Dutch for $34,000. The US government continues to own and manage Grand Island as part of Nebraska since it was acquired by the United States in 1868.
