In 1902–1903 an irrigation ditch was constructed through downtown to bring water from Hillsboro Reservoir upstream into town for use by local farmers; this provided many jobs for locals during World War I when demand for food wartime production soared above supply constraints. The current school building at Eighth Street and Emerson Avenue was completed in 1915; it is one of only a few buildings remaining from the original town site which included several churches (St John's Episcopal Church being particularly noteworthy).
