The current name comes from an early settler, George Stephenson, who named it after himself and his friend Ebenezer Howard. The area around Fremont now includes parts of east Lincoln and west Omaha. The first post office in Fremont was established on November 1, 1868, by Captain John A. Fremont with the name of "Humboldt". On December 2, 1869, the post office changed its name to "Fremont" after General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War while he was fighting for Union forces against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee (later known as Ulysses S Grant). In 1872–73 Republican James Gee conducted an election campaign through traveling throughout Nebraska on horseback stopping at every town or village he passed along the way to preach Christianity to Native American tribes living near Omaha and other eastern Nebraska towns that were still part of Mexico until that time. He also campaigned against Andrew Johnson's re-election as President because Johnson had agreed to allow Indian removal from Eastern Nebraska without their consent which would have sent many people out into what is now Kansas Territory including most notably Chief Joseph who had been living among the Osage Indians for more than two centuries before any white man ever set foot there. Gee's tour ended up being so successful that he decided to stay put permanently instead of continuing on downriver where he could be more effective leading religious services across various tribal boundaries all day long each day when possible instead of journeying about looking for new targets like some other politicians doing at the time even though they were actually making more progress than anyone else doing either politically or technically speaking because nobody really knows how everything works anymore except maybe somebody behind closed doors somewhere because those are usually pretty reliable indicators these days don't they? Anyway no matter what you think about James Gee I think everyone should give him some credit for at least trying even if it didn’t work out or whatever and moving on now let’s get back onto things we can all agree are important right? In short James Gee ran an election campaign through thousands of miles round trip riding horses going door to door preaching Christianity to Native Americans living near Omaha which worked out just fine according to everybody except Andrew Johnson who probably thought it would have been much better if he just left them alone anyway since obviously anything goes today especially when it comes to politics but whatever so back on topic here we are good?
