Polk, who helped liberate the slaves in California while commandant of San Francisco’s military prison. Fremont served as a strategic location on the Western Oregon Trail and its economy depended upon trade with China and other areas east of the Rockies. In 1868, Fremont was renamed Omaha after General George Armstrong Custer, the Union general who fought at Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee during the American Civil War
